What is the Static Monsters and how did it start?

The Static Monsters – Log Lift and Axle Deadlift Competition

What is it?

The Static Monsters is made up of two competitions that happen at different times of the year.

  • Worldwide – The Static Monsters Worldwide is a one weekend, super sized strongman competition with events running across more than 20 countries. All events follow the same rules, equipment regulations and scoring system. This offers competitors a world ranking on their Log Lift and Axle Deadlift.
  • World Championships – The Static Monsters World Championships offers a place for the best in the world to compete head to head. Those who place in the top ten in their class in the Worldwide event are invited to compete in one big competition to see who is the best of the monsters

Goals:

  • To give more access to people to be able to try the sport of strongman by having more events in more regions
  • To offer the opportunity for anyone to be able to have a go at the sport, regardless of ability
  • Have an event where both the elite and the novice can compete together and enjoy it and be able to have quality competition.

How it started:

The Static Monsters was put together as a small Strongman Style Push/Pull competition in November 2015 by Strongman Gold Coast and Coco’s Gym. With the Log Lift and the Axle Deadlift being iconic strength sports events and also being well known and practiced among strongman athletes, it was the perfect fit to get people to have a go. The competition was then opened up to allow more people to be able to compete against eachother under the same rules and conditions. Year two we had 9 events across 3 countries. Year 3 was 29 events across 9 countries and 2018 was 39 events from 14 countries. 2019 had 49 events, 721 competitors and 19 countries involved.

For 2020 it is expected that more than 60 events will be run on the same weekend across the planet under The Static Monsters Worldwide.

2018 was the first year of The Static Monsters World Championships. Competitors from around the world that placed in the top ten of their weight class would qualify in the worldwide event in 2017. On May 20th 2018, competitors from 10 countries in 8 weight classes came to the Gold Coast Arts Centre.

The second running of the World Championships added classes for the Masters Athletes and was run at the Carrara indoor sports stadium on the Gold Coast, Australia on June 15 and 16 2018, with competitors from 12 countries attending. For 2020 the event moves to Ohio, USA and will be the first year that the World Championships offers classes for Adaptive athletes as well.

The Static Monsters is now the biggest strongman event of its kind in the world and will continue to grow. Static Monsters gives new athletes the opportunity to try competing for the first time without the barrier of having to learn too many events. The Static Monsters also offers experienced athletes some goals to compete for and the opportunity to compete against the best athletes in the world all under the same conditions and rules despite being across the planet.

We look forward to seeing this event grow and create opportunities for event organisers and strength sports enthusiasts for years to come.
